Most of my objectives preparing for this summer have been met. But I still don't have a reasonable housing situation. Delaying my arrival didn't help, but I should have been a lot more proactive about this. As I make contacts this time around, that should all be easier for the next opportunity, but right now, options are slim. I've done a little apartment/efficiency shopping and much of what is geographically feasible is too expensive, would require large deposits or longer leases than I can justify. It turned out that the "bulletin board" espoused by the Rio HR and other previous year dealers was a huge blank. I've browsed Craig's list and picked up the local Nickle, newspaper classifieds, etc and have made a few phone calls, but no luck on finding someone who just wants a temporary roommate right now. It will happen, but probably not this week.
My reservation at the Sahara runs up this afternoon, so I'm packing my things and heading to the outskirts for the weekend to avoid the rate crush caused by the swelling of arriving poker players, weekend resort rates, etc. Good think I have the car, because I can stay at Whiskey Pete's in Primm for 10% of what I can get near the strip tonight. A bit of a commute and gas aint cheap either, but its what I gotta do right now. Then SpeedBump comes into town late Saturday and I'll be sharing a comped room with him at Palace Station for a few days.
Internet access might be a little compromised as well. I'm finding that the concept of free Wifi hasn't hit Vegas. Most bookstores and coffee shops charge for access. All of the resort connection fees are steep. The monorail was supposed to have a free connection, but every attempt but one has failed. I connect to their servers, but can't get to the internet and its not like there is an IT pro hanging out by the automated ticket machines. The best bet so far has been McDonalds, but I'm now starting to think that a Sprint card would actually be less expensive (if you count up the number of Egg McMuffins I am buying).
