If it Weren't for Bad Luck, I'd Have No Luck at All

My roommate is on day shift and I am on swing, so we don't see each other all that much. I went up to check out the tournament area a few hours before I needed to report and saw Luke, out of uniform, looking for a game. With the main event being a limit tournament, today being Monday, and the BCS Championship game on tonight, I guess the room is a little slower than anticipated. There appear to be far more dealers than needed. I later learned that Luke overslept and never made it to work, and as it turns out, I wish I had as well.

I was assigned to the satellites area, which is normally a prime assignment, but today there were about 10 dealers ahead of me and games were slow to fill. After awhile, the swing dealer coordinator came through and pulled out all of the day shift dealers, so that helped, but I was still several dealers back in the queue and waited patiently for my chance. After about 45 minutes, I was finally assigned a table, but I sat dead spread for the entire first half of the football game. Then, they showed me a little mercy and asked me to pick up my table and report to the main poker room. Again, this would normally be a juicy assignment, shuffle machines and lots of play mean very good tips in that area. But when I got there I was assigned to a dead spread (she actually opened the table right at the end of my down), and then I went on break. So, I went nearly 3 hours without pitching a single card. Blghgheh!

I did get a comfy $3/6 limit holdem game, and a couple of $1-2 no-limit holdem downs before going on break once again. After returning from that break, I got one more $1-2 no-limit down, before be re-directed back to the WPO tournament area. When I got there, the dealer coordinator did not have a place for me and was asking me to go on break once again, and report back in half an hour. It was now midnight and I had hardly worked and made very little in tips. I was a bit grumpy and volunteered to just go - if I hurried I could probably still play in the midnight tournament. I got my stuff together and rushed to go change, but my room key wouldn't work and after taking care of that, I missed my chance at the multi-table tourney. So, I sat down in a single table satellite (hmmm, now they seem to be able to fill?) and the only thing I won was the chip race. Crap!
